Code Compare

Code Compare is a tool to compare and merge differing files and folders. It takes into account the specificity of programming languages and can be used both as a Visual Studio add-in and as a standalone application.

  1. Automatic merge for TFS 2010 requires manually setting up a batch file, which is cumbersome. Also, several people have reported problems with the merge even with the batch file workaround.

  2. Create an XML Diff option that compares 2 xml files at the structure level, rather than the text level. This would allow for diff xml files where the attributes have been reordered.

  6. Perforce is a major source control solution, but using Code compare with it is difficult. I had to create a proxy because of the archaic command line set up. The 3way merge also expose tags in the result file that should be interpret internally and removed at the opening.

  7. I make code reviews with Review Assitant and have to compare C# files with Code Compare.
    It would be very useful if Code Compare could expand all regions automatically as right now I always have to open one to be able to compare the files.
    I've searched in the options but couldn't find such a setting.

    So please just expand/unfold all C# regions automatically when comparing files.

    It’s already done. Please uncheck the “Collapse unchanged regions on opening/refresh” option in Code Compare options → Code Compare → File. You can always collapse the unchanged region manually by clicking the “Toggle Unchanged Regions” button at ‘Changes’ menu.

  8. We have two monitors, when we open Code Compare on the right monitor the next time I open it opens on the left one. This is very annoying.

  12. An option to automatically update the TFS configuration during install would be nice. The following .reg entries indicate how to do this:

    [HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\TeamFoundation\SourceControl\DiffTools]

    [HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\TeamFoundation\SourceControl\DiffTools.*]

    [HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\TeamFoundation\SourceControl\DiffTools.*\Compare]
    "Command"="C:\Program Files (x86)\Devart\CodeCompare\CodeCompare.exe"
    "Arguments"="/environment=standalone /SC=TFS /W /T1=%6 /T2=%7 %1 %2"

    [HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\TeamFoundation\SourceControl\DiffTools.*\Merge]
    "Command"="C:\Program Files (x86)\Devart\CodeCompare\CodeMerge.exe"
    "Arguments"="/environment=standalone /TF=%1 /MF=%2 /RF=%4 /BF=%3 /TT=%6 /MT=%7 /SC=TFS"

  14. Now we are referring blank lines, regions, and comments to the following for their code element. A comparison of them by order can provide the best result.

  15. I was trying to merge two files from a library that had evolved separately in both WPF and Silverlight and I had the issue that there were the same or similar methods in both but in different places. It would be very handy to have a tool to rearrange all methods, field declarations, properties etc. to have the same order at one file with the other (you'd select which one is the master in that case). It should try to respect regions of the master and use them in the other file too

  16. Scrollbar syncing should be improved a lot. It jumps all around the place while scrolling and I quickly get lost in large files. For instance, if a method is way larger in the left file than in the right, all subsequent methods are misaligned, which makes tracking differences a lot harder for me.

  17. In Visual Studio 2010 it should be possible to select two files, click click and select "Compare files".

  18. I suggest to disable/enable borders for difference blocks. When looking files with lot of changes here is too lot of drawings. Winmerge does not highlights border of blocks and this looking good.

  20. This would avoid having to examine both left and right scrollbars for changes.
    Messagebox could be something like "Files are identical, do you want to continue opening the files?" [OK/Cancel]
